Excursion Choice

Birds on the western coast of Ras R'mal & street art in Djerbahood

This excursion first takes participants west by minibus for a two-hour hike and extensive birdwatching along the western coast of the Ras R'mal peninsula. This part of the coast is like a small bay where, depending on the tide, numerous bird species, mainly larger waders and gulls can be observed, like for example Eurasian Curlew, Grey Plover, Eurasian Spoonbill, Slender-billed Gull, Black-backed Gull, etc.

We then continue by minibus to the small village of Erriadh to the southwest, which is now better known as Djerbahood and exhibits the works of over 200 street artists in a kind of open-air gallery. There is the possibility of a short guided tour free of charge. Original cafés invite you to linger over tea or Turkish coffee, while small boutiques and street stalls offer handicrafts and "produits de terroir": Spices, harissa, homemade couscous and pasta. After about an hour, the participants return to the conference venue by minibus. Short bird watching stops are possible along the entire route of this excursion.

Birdwatching along the coast of Guellala & ethnographic museum

On the minibus ride from the hotel to the small coastal town of Guellala, the participants first cross the island of Djerba towards the south.
There are several birdwatching stops along the coast and visits to picturesque historical monuments, including the famous Sidi Yati mosque. Participants will mainly see gulls and waders, such as Slender-billed Gull, Mediterranean Gull, Eurasian Spoonbill, Greater Flamingo, Great Egret, Common Redshank, but the variety of land birds is also remarkable.

Afterwards, a visit to a pottery workshop with the opportunity to purchase local pottery is on the program. This is followed by a one-hour visit to the ethnographic museum in Guellala. Admission is to be paid by the participants themselves and costs 7 dinars (approx. 2 euros) per person in the group. Those who don't want to visit the museum can take a walk in the area.

At the end of the excursion, the group of participants returns to the conference venue by minibus. Short bird watching stops are possible along the entire route of this excursion.
